Phil: Now to the Trump administration's crackdown on foreign students. The administration has revoked the visas of dozens of international students, making them ineligible to remain here in the U.S. and finish their studies. ABC News¡¯ Melissa Don joins me now with details on this. Melissa, how is this being executed, and do students get any warning at all?

Melissa: Well, Phil, what we're learning right now is that students in universities, they¡¯re all really learning and finding out in real-time. Basically, Phil with little to no warning. Essentially, the State Department is deciding what countries¡¯ visas to revoke, and they're doing so immediately.

And look, yesterday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on social media that he is ¡°taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders, and effective immediately.¡± For this situation here, they cited that South Sudan's failure to accept deported citizens in a timely manner, and that's why they were firing back with that response. And really, Phil, what we're seeing is that then those students they get notified that their visa has been pulled, and that¡¯s directly impacting their status and, of course, enrollment at the university.

Phil: Is there anything these universities can do, Melissa and what happens next for these students?

Melissa: Well, Phil, what we're learning is, for instance for many of these students, one UC San Diego student was actually deported after their visa was revoked and then when they were denied entry into the U.S. at the border. And so some of these universities say all they can do is monitor this in real time. UC Davis calling it distressing and saying they're just providing resources for those impacted. Even so, the University of California Office President saying they're ¡°committed to doing what they can to support all members of the community,¡± but that they have to do so under the law. So basically, the university says they¡¯re just going to have to continue following all of the state and federal laws, Phil.

Phil: All right, we're going to continue following the story. Melissa Adan, thank you.

Questions:

1. What criteria is the State Department using to determine which students' visas to revoke, and how does this impact their academic future?

2. In what ways are universities responding to the challenges faced by international students whose visas have been revoked, and what resources are they providing?

3.  How do legal limitations affect universities' ability to intervene in visa revocation cases, and what support can they realistically offer to impacted students?
