News Anchor:
World leaders and tech executives are in Paris this week to discuss how to
safely embrace artificial intelligence. Vice President JD Vance is taking part
in that summit. NBC's Raf Sanchez reports from Paris.
Raf Sanchez:
Vice President JD Vance, making his debut on the world stage today at this
global artificial intelligence summit here in Paris. We're expecting the
message from the Vice President on AI to be "America first." President
Trump has been very explicit—he wants the United States to be the world's
dominant AI superpower. He has rolled back Biden-era regulations that were
intended to make sure that AI was developed safely, the President saying that
they, in fact, shackled the American AI industry. He is also weighing new
restrictions on advanced AI chips to China.
That
comes after the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek really rattled the markets,
appearing to produce a pretty sophisticated AI model at just a fraction of the
cost of those coming out of Silicon Valley.
Tonight,
the Vice President will attend a working dinner with fellow world leaders, and
this will be the first chance for those leaders to get a sense of an American
Vice President who's 40 years old, has no foreign policy experience, and has
been one of the most outspoken voices calling for the United States to cut off
aid to Ukraine. He has said, in his words, that he does not care what the
outcome of that war between Ukraine and Russia is.

Sanchez, NBC News, Paris.
