Hi, pals. Today, we're going to hang out with some of
the coolest things on Earth — trees. Let's go.
All trees do something super
important.
They help us breathe.
Teddy: Wait, they help us breathe?
Yes, Teddy. Exactly.
Trees take in the carbon dioxide and turn it into
oxygen, the air we need to breathe.
So every time we breathe in, we've got trees to thank
for that.
We also help them, too.
We breathe out the carbon dioxide.
Teddy: So we need each other?
Exactly. Just like a team, trees make the best
teammates.
Teddy: Let's keep going.
Teddy: Hey, look! See that squirrel?
Squirrels store food inside the tree, and birds make
their homes in the branches.
Trees are habitats.
A habitat is like a natural home for animals, birds,
and other types of organisms.
Teddy: Whoa! So, trees are like little apartments for
animals?
That's right. Trees give animals all kinds of cozy
spots to live. They're like wildlife condos.
Trees are way cooler than they look.
Teddy: Trees provide shade.
One of many ecosystem services.
Ecosystem services are services that the natural
landscapes provide for us. Trees act like natural air conditioners. They give
us shade and cool everything off. Some trees even provide food.
Teddy: Like apple trees?
Exactly.
They make tons of different foods like apples,
oranges, bananas, and even chocolate.
Teddy: That's amazing.
Trees even make their own food, too.
They take the sunlight from the leaves through a
process called photosynthesis and absorb water from the roots to make their own
meals.
Teddy: Wow.
So, remember, trees are way cooler than they look.
They help us breathe, give homes to animals, make
food, and even cool us down.
